The 18th Annual Oakland Juneteenth Celebration & Street Festival took place on June 21, 2025, at 3233 Market Street in West Oakland, and it delivered an unforgettable day of music, movement, and meaning.

Hosted by B‑H Brilliant Minds Project, Inc. in partnership with STU212 Music Therapy, Coping & Creativity, the free event ran from 11 AM to 6 PM, turning Market Street into a multiblock celebration of legacy, rhythm, and joy.

Festival Theme and Purpose
This year’s theme—“We Are Tapping Into The Ancestors’ Wisdom and Having the Freedom to Express Ourselves!”—wasn’t just printed on banners; it pulsed through every performance, speech, and vendor interaction. Community members of all ages showed up to celebrate liberation while exploring how expression serves as a bridge between the past and future.
From health zones to dance stages, the festival prioritized healing and heritage in equal measure. It wasn’t just a day of entertainment—it was a full-circle celebration of Black culture, resistance, and creativity.

What Went Down
The street transformed into a festival corridor bursting with energy. Highlights included:
Online art courses
  • Back-to-back performances from rising and established artists spanning gospel, spoken word, R&B, and bass-heavy rap.
  • A wide range of Black-owned vendors selling food, fashion, wellness products, and handcrafted art.
  • Interactive youth zones, including “Little Brilliant Minds,” as well as empowerment stations from HHREC, TAY, and YAB.
  • The Antioch Pantherettes delivered a high-octane group dance performance that pulled the crowd into synchronized cheers.
  • The Health & Wellness Zone offered screenings, therapy resources, and financial-literacy consultations.
  • A moving screening of Sign My Name to Freedom, honoring Bay Area icon Betty Reid Soskin.
The festival wasn’t one-note—it was a whole arrangement of culture, wellness, youth leadership, and ancestral connection.

Spotlight on the Performers
The festival’s artist lineup reflected Oakland’s creative heartbeat. A diverse rotation of talent filled the schedule, each bringing a unique voice to the mic:
  • Cin layered sharp lyricism with raw R&B melodies.
  • DoubledThaCollegeKid merged punchline-heavy rap with witty, introspective storytelling.
  • J.R. Rice channeled gospel traditions into a modern, emotionally powerful set.
  • Jackson laid out baritone-spoken verses on justice, self-worth, and unity.
  • Jas’Marlae stunned the audience with theatrical flair and melodic control.
  • Kiyomi served up smooth, late-night R&B that felt both modern and nostalgic.
  • Lady‑SN3AK brought club energy and deep bass with a commanding stage presence.
  • La’Jhon Hawkins tapped into vocal soul to deliver a set rooted in heartache and healing.
  • Nini Heart offered gospel-infused vocals that stirred the crowd deeply.
  • Only Taj combined charisma, complexity, and verbal precision in his bars.
  • Velan brought poignant, socially aware spoken word to the frontlines.
  • And the Antioch Pantherettes? They didn’t perform—they activated the space.
Every set, every dance, every lyric shared on stage resonated with both rooted purpose and present-day flair.

Musical Landscape

While no single song was credited as a centerpiece for the event, the music told a collective story. Each genre threaded together to echo a message: Black freedom isn’t just historical—it’s ongoing, vibrant, and vital.

Curated by STU212 Music Therapy, the flow of performances acted as guided therapy—an intentional space where beats moved bodies and lyrics challenged minds.
From smooth R&B tones to pulsing bass lines, the music carried messages of pride, progress, pain, and perseverance, all wrapped in rhythm.

A City Connected as a Cultural Hub, Oakland Showed Out
From the stoops to the stages, generations came together to honor Juneteenth’s roots while standing strong in today’s moment.

The event didn’t just draw locals. Visitors from throughout the Bay Area arrived to shop Black, eat well, learn something new, and show love to the performing artists.

Community members were seen moving between vendor booths, picking up literature, talking with health experts, and enjoying art that reflected their own experiences. And youth involvement wasn’t symbolic—it was real. From performers to volunteers, kids and teens helped define the rhythm of the day.

Tips that Paid Off
For those who came prepared, the experience was even richer. Here’s what worked:
  • Early arrival made it easier to catch every performance and scope out the best eats.
  • Hydration and shade helped guests beat the midday heat.
  • Bringing cash was smart, since a few vendors were cash-only.
  • Asking questions at empowerment booths sparked deeper connections and future opportunities.
The beauty of the event wasn’t just in what was offered—it was in how openly people engaged with it.

What Stood Out Most
As a writer who spends most weekends outdoors, this festival felt like a cultural hike through Oakland’s soul. There was nothing passive about the day—it demanded presence, attention, and joy.

What Stuck With Me Most were the moments between the main events: a vendor sharing her story while braiding a child’s hair; a grandmother nodding rhythmically beside her teenage grandson during a spoken-word set; an artist walking off stage into a crowd of hugs and daps.
That’s the kind of memory that doesn’t fade with the flyers.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead
The 2025 Oakland Juneteenth Celebration & Street Festival didn’t just mark a date—it echoed a movement. With thoughtful programming, hometown pride, and a lineup of deeply talented artists, the event reaffirmed Oakland’s place as a lighthouse for Black brilliance.

If you missed it this year, make it a priority next time. If you were there, you already know—you didn’t just attend a festival. You lived through something.
Same time, same place, next June?
